They found that the silkworm secreted an enzyme responsible for breaking down the silk. While researching the enzyme further, they discovered a specific type of bacteria inside the silkworm that produced the enzyme, now known as Serratia E-15.Serratia E-15 is used today during the production process of serrapeptase.
